Brand new stuff hot off the presses!
First I found this add on the back cover of Good Housekeeping's Quick & Simple magazine last night and bought it just for the cover. Enjoy the photos there are one, two, three.
The next is three new clips released by PBS on YouTube. All three are interviews with script writer Andrew Davies. I love the one part where Mr. Knightley in Emma says "abominable scoundrel, he will soon be gone" and then we here Mr. Davies voice. He simpers and smirks and talks on:
The Men and Women of Jane Austen
Also there's the trailer for the Jane Austen season which you might have seen before. All of the above links have clips from Sense & Sensibility as well as the other six films to be shown during the Jane Austen Season.

PBS' MASTERPIECE THEATRE to Present 'The Complete Jane Austen'
Exciting News for those in the USA! Starting in January 2008, Masterpiece Theatre will be airing four months of Jane Austen films on Sunday evenings. All six of her works will be included: the three new ITV adaptations (Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion), the long antisipated brand-new Sense & Senibility (made for BBC with script by Andrew Davies), Emma (with Kate Beckinsale, made for A&E/ITV), and Pride & Prejudice (made for BBC/A&E staring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle). Then to top off the Austen Series will be a film called Miss Austen Regrets (true story based on Jane Austen's own letters and diaries) will also be broadcast. We Janeites in the USA await with great expectations the arrival of our beloved authoress!

Sense & Sensibility (2007)
12/31/07
May I wish a very happy new year to all my visitors! May the new year be filled with all things Austen!
Here are three new articles about S&S. An interview from Times Online with the Andrew Davies, adapter extraodinare!
The Western Mail also has an interview with the incorrigible Mr. Davies who says he's added a sense of adventure to the film.
Also The Telegraph has an article about filming S&S with a cute picture of Charity Wakefield as Marianne getting some make-up applied between shoots.
12/18/07
I am in seventh heaven with the uncovering of two new trailers for S&S!
The first is from the BBC One airing of the film and includes a fairly melodramatic tag line of a new drama to please all the senses. It does include the following scenes from the film:
- The Devonshire coast and Elinor walking along the hills with wind blowing in her face.
- Marianne sniffing a shawl, perhaps with Willoughby's scent on it?
- Closeups of Edward and Elinor looking at each other across a room.
- Marianne entering a ballroom. Shot from above of dancers (love that floor!). Same ballroom scene Marianne, then Miss Grey, then Willoughby looking over their shoulders. Shot of a fainting Marianne being supported by Elinor and Colonel Brandon who gives a piercing frown at presumably Willoughby.
- Marianne embracing a rather tearful Elinor.
- A man's hand running down a woman's arm. The woman is in a corset so this is presumably the seduction scene we've been promised.
- Hands touching on a banister.
- A pastry being picked up.
- A duel between Colonel Brandon and Willoughby.
- Glimpses of a dinner table with Edward, Marianne and Mrs. Ferrars.
- Marianne almost being kissed by Willoughby.

New photos of the production and filming of Sense & Sensibility can be found at Radio Times online. These photos mostly include crew setting up for shots and actors sitting for makeup but there is one lovely shot of them filming at Barton Cottage .
11/29/07
Region 2 DVD of Sense & Sensibility 2008 is available for pre-order now and officially avaiable on January 21st at the BBC shop.
Region 1 DVD for USA and Canada is available for pre-order now on the WBGH shop and will be officially avaiable on March 1st, 2008. Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion and Miss Austen Regrets are also available for pre-order. I'm not sure the covers are anything to rave about but worth a look.
Edit to Add: Mansfield Park DVD is available Spain (Region 2) according to this site. We think the cover very odd but here's another more sensible one.
11/24/07
Nine lovely new publicity photos from Sense & Sensibility can be found on Lady Blue Lake's blog. Her previous post of photos was wonderful but now we'll definitely have to keep an eye on any new developments from her. They nine photos include close ups of Colonel Brandon, Marianne, Elinor, Edward, and Willoughby as well as Brandon hunting, Elinor and Edward, Marianne and Willoughby, and our first look at Mrs. Dashwood with her daughters. I can't wait till March!
11/5/07
A new interview with actress Charity Wakefield has some comments from her on playing Marianne Dashwood. She says in the interview that she relates quite a bit with Marianne and feels privledged to play a part made famous by Kate Winslet. She also makes this statement on what we can expect from the new version: "The cast is quite young which is close to the original text. It's a lively version and very natural, even though there are beautiful still shots in it. It'll feel very real, not like watching a novel."
9/25/07
Our friends at Austen Blog brought our attention to four new photos from the new production at Lady Blue Lake's blog including the men from 'Sense & Sensibility': Willoughby, Colonel Brandon, Edward Ferrars (two of them!).
8/14/07
Austen Blog posted a scanned photo of the new Elinor and Marianne Dashwood go on over and take a look.
6/18/07
The Telegraph has an interview with actor David Morrissey who will portray Colonel Brandon in BBC's new Sense & Sensibility miniseries. When asked about Andrew Davies' comments on how he "butched up" the two male leads, Morrissey says "Oh, there's lots of talk about butching and sexing us up, but it's only because the characters are given more screen time than in Ang Lee's 1995 version. I don't know how butch or sexy it will be to see me riding, but that's what I seemed to spend a lot of time doing. I certainly bonded very well with my horse."
The article also says that Sense and Sensibility, which will be shown on the BBC in the UK in September in three 90-minute instalments. As far as I know they are still planning on showing S&S in the USA on Masterpiece Theatre in January of 2008.
5/28/07
The Times Online has an article with screenplay writer Andrew Davies about the changes he has made to Jane Austen's novel in the new adaptation which is currently filming and will be aired in 2008 on BBC and Masterpiece Theater. “I’ve had to work up the guys to make them stronger,” he said. He apparently plans on adding things such as Edward Ferrars cutting wood in the rain with a wet shirt, Colonel Brandon riding lots of horses, and there's some debate as to weather the first scene of the adaptation will show Willoughby seducing or raping the young Eliza. As an article in Guardian Unlimited says "Sense and Sensibility will undergo a sex and violence makeover". Oh, joy...that's just what the story needs. *roles eyes*
4/13/07
Thanks to the alert from my Austen Blog friends, I have found that the IMDb page for this adaptation has recently been updated to include five new names of cast members, so I'll be updating my Sense & Sensibility page with new photos and links for your viewing pleasure.
Also confirmation for the casting of actors David Morrissey, Dominic Cooper, Dan Stevens, Mark Williams, Janet McTeer, Mark Gatiss, as well as reconfirmation of Hattie Morahan (Elinor) and Charity Wakefield (Marianne) are included in a new BBC article on the adaptation! A lovely tidbit in the article mentions the filming location: "Sense And Sensibility is filming on location in Berkshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire and Devon until early June." How lovely!
And the Times Online has an article entitled BBC’s Austen will be a rural Sex in the City. But I don't think the author really spoke to Andrew Davies but the sentiments of sex, sex, sex, are the same. I'm rather getting tired of it!
4/3/03
Dan Steven's CV confirms that he will indeed be playing Edward Ferrars in Sense & Sensibility. Also IMDb's message board for this production had a poster claiming that filming for the production started on Monday, March 26th and mentioned three new (possible) cast members: David Morissey, Mark Williams, and Janet McTeer. No news yet on which characters they will be playing but our friends at Austen Blog have speculated they will play Colonel Brandon, Sir John Middleton and Mrs. Dashwood (in that order). All rumors are to be taken as just that, rumors, until they are officially confirmed. But it's so much fun to speculate!
3/26/07
IMDb has gone from claiming that actor Dominic Cooper is to play Edward Ferrars to reporting that he is to portray Mr. Willoughby and actor Dan Stevens is to portray Edward Ferrars. We look for confirmation of these facts but as yet have none. It is fun to speculate though!
3/13/07
Actress Hattie Morahan's CV reports that she "is about to start filming Sense and Sensiblity for the BBC, playing Eleanor." We must assume that this means she will be portraying Elinor Dashwood and think that alongside Charity Wakefield she will do very well!
2/20/07
Actress Charity Wakefield's CV reports that she will be playing Marianne Dashwood in the upcoming BBC adaptation!
Mansfield Park (2007)
4/2/07
Another small review of Mansfield Park that says it was anything but revved-up Austen. I tend to agree.
3/21/07
Reviews are flooding in from all corners about Mansfield Park that aired last Sunday. Apparently 5.9 million viewers watched film though not all of them finished watching it. Our friends at Austen Blog has been kept very busy with articles and opinions from the press and readers who all have mixed feelings.
3/17/07
Mansfield Park will air tomorrow, Sunday the 18th, at 9:00pm on ITV1 in the UK! See the trailer here on ITV's site and visit the official site for characters, behind the scenes, picture gallery and more!
3/1/07
Austen Blog was sent a scan from an article about Michelle Ryan the young actress who will portray Maria Bertram. The article has a rather nice photo of her in character with her sister Julia (Catherine Steadman) standing behind. There is a sour faced lady on the stairs who I believe is a servant and not Mrs. Norris (Maggie O'Neil) though it does look a tad like her. UK release of Mansfield Park keeps showing up as March 18th but who knows weather that is correct or not.
2/21/07
A reported cover for Mansfield Park DVD which is now available for pre-order! Update: Play.com now offers synopses of the movie which may of may not be accurate. Amazon also has the UK DVD available for pre-order.
2/20/07
A rather short article about Billie Piper as Fanny Price. Ms. Piper shares her thoughts on corsets and her fellow co-stars. The article features a snapshot of a rather bust Fanny Price.
2/07
The official Newby Hall site has two lovely photos and little blurb of the cast filming at the Hall which will serve as Mansfield Park house.
Northanger Abbey (2007)
4/11/07
Steph, a fellow poster at site C19 has some very clever screen caps from the Northanger Abbey DVD most of them featuring the demi-god Henry Tilney! I love his smile in particular, it's just so charming!
4/2/07
St. Albans Observer does not set out a very glowing review of the Northanger Abbey DVD and calls it a "bodice-ripping adaptation" which is "really rather naughty". The Telegraph has a review on "Bath time for Austen", and continuing the bath time feel the Times Online's article says that "Austen's bath runs hot and cold".
Also The Felicity Jones Placeholder has several lovely new scans of different reviews and articles from such news sources as The Times, Sunday Telegraph, and Daily Telegraph, so check out the gallery here.
3/26/07
Northanger Abbey aired last night at 9pm on ITV1 in the UK and reports are coming in with mixed feelings as always. This adaptation seems to be a little more in favor than Mansfield Park though and some how we knew it would!
- Here is a scan of the Radio Times articles about the film, thanks to Austen Blog. Lovely pic of JJ Feild with the horses used in the film. And the second page has a lovely view of Catherine Morland and Isabella Thorpe.
- The Hollywood Reporter says that the bottom line in the film is all about "Lust and adventure" make it "a first-rate Austen adaptation". Lovely pic of Liam Cunningham as General Tilney.
- And a short review here says that "Jones makes a chirpy, if vaguely annoying heroine, but the whole thing lacks charm".
3/21/07
The official trailer for Northanger Abbey is available on ITV's website now and promises a fantastic production! Also Classic FM now has their Behind the Scenes podcast ready so you can listen to interviews with William Beck (John Thorpe) and JJ Feild (Henry Tilney). Also Classic FM's has available parts 1, 2, and 3 of their abridged readings from the book, read by Lisa Duncombe.
3/14/07
There's a lovely article and views of Felicity Jones as Catherine Morland on her unofficial fan page Felicity Jones - The Placeholder Page.
2/21/07
A reported cover for the new Northanger Abbey DVD which is available for pre-order already! Update: Play.com now offers a synopses for the movie which sounds which as we know rarely tell the whole story. Amazon also has the UK DVD available for pre-order.
2/20/07
Actor JJ Feild as Henry Tilney says he's far too badly behaved for Georgian society. The picture contained in the article is of Billie Piper (Fanny Price) and JJ Feild (Henry Tilney) when they stared together in BBC film 'The Ruby in the Smoke'.
2/07
Some photos of the set can be seen at Solitary Elegance , a lovely site with information and news on the upcoming Northanger Abbey movie. On her site Ms. Heather L. has posted close ups of two photos taken by a private individual who stumbled on the filming during her holiday in Ireland. On set preparing to film Beechen Cliff walk - Catherine Morland (Felicity Jones) & Henry Tilney (JJ Feild) can be seen at far left in their Regency costumes! And Catherine Morland and Henry Tilney talk as Eleanor Tilney lags behinds.
2/07
A picture featuring reported extras for the new adaptation.

Persuasion (2007)
4/11/07
Helen82, a fellow poster on the aforementioned C19 boards has made some music from the DVD into an MP3 file which can be listened to or downloaded on her site.
4/10/07
Steph, a fellow poster at site C19 has made some lovely screen caps from her DVD of the film. My personal favorites have to Mr. Elliot and Mr. Elliot kissing Anne's hand as I have seemed to have formed a strange obsession for that gentleman!
4/2/07
Actor Anthony head's official site has a page dedicated to Persuasion that tells the story and some spoilers of the film. Also there are five lovely publicity photos of Mr. Head as Sir Walter Elliot and with his fellow co-stars.
- Sir Walter at a concert sitting with the excessively rich Lady Dalrymple.
- Sir Walter with his eldest daughter the elegant Elizabeth and youngest daughter the child-like Mary.
- A long view of Sir Walter in stately dress.
- A close up of vain Sir Walter Elliot.
- Sir Walter (notice the shoe) with his three daughter, Anne, Elizabeth and Mary.
Also Rupert Penry-Jones's official site has a few new photos that can be viewed here.
4/1/07
Reviews and opinions of Persuasion have been rolling in the past few days and again with mixed feelings.
- First scans of the Radio Times article about Persuasion have lovely pictures of cast members including the illusive Mrs. Clay (first page, second page)!
- A small review of the film says that Persuasion is the best of all the three ITV productions and is the one aimed more at adults instead of teenage girls who kiss posters of their favorite hero each night before bed.
- This article has four lovely publicity photos which includes a close-up of Captain Wentworth and Louisa Musgrove. The article attached has many spoilers so you won't want to read it if you don't want to know how the movie ends!
3/31/07
Persuasion will air this Sunday on ITV1 at 9pm UK time. In preparation for this production two new articles have emerged with two new publicity photos from the film.
- Manchester Evening News has a lovely interview with actress Sally Hawkins in which we find that she truly does understand Jane Austen. There's a photo attached of a very pretty Anne Elliot.
- The Hollywood Reporter's article presents a favorable review of the film and includes a photo of Louisa Musgrove flirting with Captain Wentworth while poor Anne Elliot looks on. The article includes a cast list and we are happy to see a few gaps filled in such as the elder Musgroves and Mrs. Smith.
3/8/07
Visit Bath has several lovely articles about Jane Austen's Bath that feature two very good publicity photos of Sir Walter Elliot and his daughters, and the three sisters Elizabeth, Anne and Mary. On the site you'll be able to 'Win a Jane Austen break in Bath' and Walk In the footsteps of Jane Austen with An audio walking tour of Bath.
3/7/07
Austen Blog has a lovely picture of Rupert Penry-Jones as Captain Wentworth.
3/6/07
Manchester Evening News online has a lovely article with Rupert Penry-Jones in which he discusses how he cried both times on seeing Persuasion, his opinions on the costumes he wore in the film as well as Captain Wentworth, and the real story behind the kissing scene in the film. There's a lovely photo, that we've seen before, of Rupert and Sally in costume as Captain Wentworth and Anne Elliot.
3/3/07
Online Telegraph Magazine has a lovely three page article about the Powers of persuasion and being on the set of the new Persuasion film. There's a lovely photo included of Rupert Perry-Jones (Captain Wentworth) and Jennifer Higham (Louisa Musgrove) filming the fall scene in Lyme Regis.
3/1/07
The Region 2 DVDs of Persuasion are available for pre-order at Play.com and Amazon.co.uk. Unfortunately there aren't any cover pictures or reviews for this item as of yet. Edit: Amazon now has the cover shot for the DVD and it's rather different from the Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey covers because they will be distributed by ITV-DVD, while Persuasion will be distributed by 2 Entertain Video (part of a partnership with BBC Video).
2/27/07
There's a lovely picture on actor Anthony Head's website that shows him transformed into Sir Walter Elliot.
2/20/07
An interview with Rupert Penry-Jones as Captain Wentworth. Article speculates that he may become as popular as Colin Firth's portrayal of Mr. Darcy in the 1995 Pride & Prejudice! The article feature a strikingly handsome naval Captain that has me believing they're right.
2/07
Here are some lovely photos taken on sets in Bath with close-ups of Sally Hawkins as Anne Elliot, Rupert Penry-Jones as Captain Frederick Wentworth and other extras as well as filming crew.

You can also watch the clip on YouTube thanks to user amiedheloise who posted the clip yesterday. You can also watch it at Austen Blog or at ITV's official Jane Austen adaptaion page.
There are several things we can learn from this trailer:
- Northanger Abbey will include the theater scene (which is my favorite), John Thorpe dancing with Cathe
